A Review of the Hövding 3

Those who know me know that I am a keen cyclist. Not in the ‘head-to-toe in Lycra trying to beat my lap times’ way, but in an ‘I would genuinely rather cycle than get the tube’ way.

It’s nearly 10 years ago now that I decided it might be a good idea to buy myself a nice shiny new bike (the first I’d had since childhood) and have a go at commuting on the busy London streets. When I got my bike, I was so terrified that I couldn’t even bring myself to ride it to the cycling lesson I had organised to try and get myself ready to start cycling to work. Somehow in those 10 years, I’ve gone from terrified newbie to avid cyclist. Generally, now come rain or shine, I cycle everywhere.

That’s why I was so excited to be able to try the new Hövding 3 airbag helmet. The Hövding is worn around the neck and looks a bit like you’re wearing a scarf. Although I know safety has to come first, I’m not a fan of helmet hair! So I was delighted to find out that there might be a better way of protecting my head.

Cycling without a helmet on, with the wind in my hair, feels liberating! And I know there are more important things to worry about in life, but the Hövding means I can cycle without messing up my curls! It also leaves your head free to wear a nice warm hat or even to cycle with a rain hood up – which has been great during the winter.

But it’s not all style over substance. The Hövding has been billed the world’s safest helmet. This is because the Hövding isn’t just as safe as a traditional helmet, it is actually safer; Hövding’s airbag technology protects up to 8x better than traditional bicycle helmets! Ultimately it was the safety element that persuaded me to try the Hövding, and I’m so glad I did!

The Hövding is as easy to use as a traditional helmet; I quickly get used to the routine of activating it just before I set off and deactivating it as I finish each journey. And, although it requires charging, I find that even though I often rack up nearly 30miles of cycling in a day one charge lasts for over a month.

Since giving the Hövding a try, I’ve been totally converted and honestly struggle to name a single downside. Sure, at £249 a pop it’s not the cheapest option, but after reading through the information on safety I’m utterly convinced that it’s worth every penny to be better protected when I ride. After all, as I’m sure anyone who has been unfortunate enough to have an accident on their bike would agree, you really can’t put a price on safety.

And when I compare how much money I save cycling everywhere as opposed to buying a monthly Oyster (which will set you back nearly £140 a month) £249 doesn’t seem too bad! And yes, as with any airbag the Hövding is single-use (but so is any helmet which should, of course, be replaced after any accident, no matter how minor). However, if you are unfortunate enough to have an accident you can return you Hövding for a replacement at a reduced cost.

All in all, I definitely won’t be going back to a traditional helmet, which now seems so restrictive and old fashioned! I love the freedom of cycling with my Hövding, and I love knowing that my head is better protected. And yes, although I know it’s vain, I love that I can cycle everywhere and still have curls on fleek!

You can buy Hövding in London from shops such as Fully Charged, Condor Cycles and Cloud 9 or online here.
