The top 5 yoga books for aspiring yoga nuts

Whether you’ve only just discovered the wonders of yoga, or you’ve been hitting the mat for a while, these top 5 books will help you take your love of yoga to the next level.

1. 21 Things to Know Before Starting an Ashtanga Yoga Practice

This book is short and sweet but well worth a read, especially if you are just starting out on your yoga journey. Even though the title references Astanga yoga, this is a good place to start regardless of what sale of yoga you’re interested in doing.

2. Yoga School Dropout

Reading this book is what inspired me to travel to India and do my yoga teacher training course (although I’m not sure thats what the author intended!). This is a light hearted, amusing and honest take on the world of yoga.

3. Going Om

I read this collection of short real-life stories while at a yoga retreat in Cambodia and found them to be touching and inspiring. It includes a piece from Cheryl Strayed, author of the number-one New York Times bestseller Wild which is reason alone to read it if you ask me!

4. Yoga Girl

This book, written by instafamous yoga star Rachel Brathen, is a mix of the story of how Rachel found yoga, recipes for healthy treats and guidance on how to do a range of yoga postures. Personally I really enjoyed this mix. The book was pretty light and I read it all in a gulp in one day, but I really enjoyed it and in particular found Rachel’s story of her journey from teenage to tearaway interesting and inspiring.

5. The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali

This is the classic text and a must for anyone who is serious about taking their yoga practice to the next level, although probably not the place to start if you are a yoga newbie and just looking for an introduction to the world of yoga.
