Koh Tao is little gem of an island in the Gulf Of Thailand. It’s located off the east coast near to Koh Pangag and Koh Samui, but is much smaller, less developed, and less often visited than its neighbours.
I recently spent 2 months living on this sleepy, beautiful island so I thought I’d write a post to share 5 things you can do on Koh Tao. So if you are thinking of visiting, read on. And even if you’re not, read on anyway. Because once you’ve read about these 5 things you can do on Koh Tao you may find you decide you have to go after all!
1.Eat at Vegetabowl
This restaurant is often at number 1 on Tripadviser for restaurants to visit on Koh Tao and after my first trip there I could see why! As much as I love Thai street food, Vegetabowl’s luscious salads and dreamy smoothies had me hooked. I seriously could not get enough of this place. That’s why it’s number 1 on the list of things to do on Koh Tao!
2.Take the AC Resort Snorkelling Trip
There are a few different places offering snorkelling trips from Koh Tao but seriously, I can’t recommend the AC one enough. It was fantastic value for money; You got an entire day snorkelling off various beaches around the island, a delicious lunch, fresh fruit and drinks, and entry to the island of Nang Yuan, which is just off the coast of Koh Tao. Our Captain was super friendly and helpful and all in all, it was a fantastic day out. Some of my group loved the tour so much they did it twice!
And it’s not hard to see why. Between the masses of colourful fish, and the beautiful white sandy beach of Nang Yuan it was a blissful day out and definitely not something to be missed if you are looking for things to do in Koh Tao.
Hike to June Juea Bay
This tiny beach is probably my favourite place on the whole island. And its a pleasant hike from Mae Haad or Sairee along the coast. If you don’t fancy the walk, you could always grab a boat taxi to take you to the bay. There’s one small restaurant there so you can get some food to keep you going, but otherwise it feels remote and quiet and like a piece of tropical heaven.
This beach was a little slice of paradise and really made me appreciate what a beautiful place Koh Tao is, so if you are looking for things to do on Koh Tao and you fancy a pretty chilled day on a pretty quiet beach, you need to head to June Juea Bay.
Get a Burger at Hungry Hippo
Ok yeah, you may have noticed that 2 out of the 5 of this list of things to do on Koh Tao are food related. What can I say? I love to eat! And yeah, again this is not Thai street food, but if you’re craving a burger this place is hard to beat!
Even better, they deliver. So if you’re feeling super lazy this is a no brainer! The veggie burgers are UNREAL and yes, I’ll admit I got them to deliver one directly to the gym I was staying at and ate it while I watched everyone else training. I’m not even sorry.
Train at Monsoon Gym
Another reason why I’ve talked about food so much in this list is that I spent all my time on Koh Tao living and training at Monsoon, and I needed some good meals to fuel all those workouts! Whether you came to Thailand specifically to train in muay thai, or you’ve never even heard of muay thai before, a visit to Monsoon Gym is a great thing to do on Koh Tao whether you go for an afternoon or a few months.
This Muay Thai gym was literally my second home. The trainers were friendly and helpful, the gym was pretty well equipped, and the other people staying in the dorm became my fitness family. Even though the bathrooms were pretty basic (and full of lizards!), I loved my time here and would go back and do it all again in a heartbeat.
You can’t beat rolling out of bed, stumbling to the gym still half asleep and bashing out some deadlifts! I got stronger and fitter while I was here, but best of all I made some lifelong friends.
So there you have it, 5 excellent things to do on Koh Tao. If you have been to this amazing island and have other suggestions then please leave them in the comments!
